Planta V Edition – spontaneous flora and cultivated plants on display at Naples’ Botanical Garden

The “Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II” presents the V edition of “Planta – not just garden”, a show-market held in Naples’ Botanical Garden dedicated to spontaneous and cultivated plants, botanical rarity, exotic flora and food products of plant origin. The event is free and will be opened to the public on 5^th, 6^th & 7^th May 2017 all along the tree-lined avenues of the Botanical Garden.

Planta V Edition represents a great showcase for all Italian plant and flora nurseries and an important reference event for all garden lovers who will be able to find among the stalls everything that deals with the garden, its care and its décor. Moreover the exhibit-market will be enriched with sporting events dedicated to taiji, vinyasa, and Zen meditation (Eastern Area) and with classes, shows, book readings, kids friendly activities, workshops, ikebana and eastern calligraphy exhibit and much more besides in partnership with organizations, schools and cultural and environmental associations.

In addition to commemorate the 50^th Anniversary of the death of Antonio De Curtis (alias Totò), considered worldwide one of the greatest Italian artists of the 20th century, Planta will dedicate a special section to this extraordinary actor with concerts, photography exhibit, poetry readings and a piano concert (on Saturday and Sunday).

The Botanical Garden of Naples is part of the University’s Department of Natural Science as research facility and was founded in 19th century by King Giuseppe Bonaparte following the project conceived by Ferdinand IV of Bourbon. It was built on an area of about 12 hectares and is located on via Foria in Naples. The Botanical Garden displays around 25,000 samples of vegetation, covering about 10,000 plant species diveded according to systematic, ecological or ethnobotanics criteria and is actively engaged in the preservation of endangered plant species. It includes an ethnobotany section for the trial of officinal remedies of plant origin and recent exhibits such as the “pathway for the visually impaired”. Nowadays the Botanical Garden mainly deals with the researches, the teaching and the conservation of rare species besides the organization of artistic and cultural exhibit and event such as Planta.
