August 15th National Holiday – Museums Openings

FERRAGOSTO IN ITALY: regular openings for museums and archaeological sites

 

Ferragosto is a special day for Italian people, celebrated every year from North to South on the 15^th of August. Nowadays it is a catholic feast day in honour of the Virgin Mary, but its roots date back to the Roman Empire.

The name Ferragosto comes from the Latin “Feriae Augusti”, which means “August’s rest”, and indicated the days set to celebrate the emperor Octavian Augustus, the first Roman emperor, from which the month of August takes its name. In ancient times, as a pagan feast, it was celebrated on August 1st. But the days of rest (and of celebration) were actually many more: even the whole month, with day 13th, in particular, dedicated to the goddess Diana. During these celebrations, people usually took a rest from the hard work to eat, drink and dance all together.

The same happens with some differences nowadays with many shops, restaurants and places of interests closed all over Italy on this day. But if you are planning to visit Italy or you are already here in these days do not worry at all! In some major cities many museums and archaeological sites will be open to give the chance to visitor to appreciate our amazing cultural heritage.
